Management styles of coaches and sports instructors

Abstract

The aim of the studies was to identify the types of management styles that characterizing the coaches and sport instructors acting in different sports disciplines. The research material was a group of 265 trainers and sport instructors. The research method used for identifying potential and actual management styles of studied trainers was the Reddin’s questionnaire. As a result, the study found that declared management styles of trainers do not have much in common with the actual styles. More efficient styles are thought to be used by 83.14% of respondents, and less effective are believed to be used by 16,86% of respondents. In fact, only 45.95% of respondents are characterized by more efficient style, and up to 54.05% by less effective styles. The most frequent declared style is the effective style – Benevolent Autocrat (102 responses). In fact, this style was found in 30 respondents and these are not necessarily those who declared this style. Large discrepancies were also recorded in relation to other styles, divided into gender, age, or possessed coaching rang as demonstrated in the content of report. Very few coaches and sport instructors are aware of the management styles their represent, so it could be an important factor in reducing their work efficiency.
