Mapping phrases describing diagnoses and nursing interventions in the care of patients with diabetes using ICNP®
Journal Title: Pielęgniarstwo XXI wieku - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction. Diabetes is a growing health, social and economic problem in the world and in Poland as well. Nursing care of patients with diabetes is aimed at preventing acute and late complications, preparing patients for effective self- control and striving to improve the quality of their life. All over the world various classifications for nursing practices have been created. Their primary objective is to formulate, collect and organize nursing terminology. One of such projects is the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®). Aim. The aim of this work was to show the possibility of using ICNP in nursing care of patients diagnosed with diabetes. The method of analysis and critique of literature was applied in this work. A review of selected textbooks and articles published in Poland in the last decade that address the problem of nursing care of patients with diabetes was conducted. Next, an attempt was made to crossmap the diagnoses / results and nursing actions formulated in a „traditional” way with the international language of nursing practice ICNP®. As a result, a list of the most common nursing problems in patients with diabetes and nursing actions undertaken was created, and they were subsequently replaced (by cross-mapping) by a phrase describing the ICNP® diagnosis, result and intervention. Conclusion. The current version of the ICNP® allows for replacing most of the „traditional” expressions describing nursing diagnoses and actions taken towards the patients with diabetes by phrases containing ICNP® „ready” diagnoses and interventions.
