MARIAMPIL V – A NEW MIDDLE PALAEOLITHIC SITE IN HALYCH-DNISTER REGION

Abstract

Geological structure and archaeological material of recently discovered Middle Paleolithic site Mariampil V, whose cultural layer is associated with an eluvial horizon of Horokhiv fossil soil complex (MIS 5), is presented in the article. The cultural horizon of the site was found in 2014. It is geologically undisturbed. More than 50 artifacts and the remains of ruined fireplace were found in the cultural layer. The presence of the last one is witnessed besides small pieces of charcoal and burnt bone by four flint artifacts which were on fire. Total examined collection of cultural layer consists of the following major categories: pre-cores, cores, tools, blades, flakes, small fragments, debris. The presence of small debris indicates local flint-knapping. According to OSL-dating the dates 64,2±6,7, 71,5±6,0 kyr BP were obtained for humus horizon of Horokhiv fossil soil complex, and 112±13 kyr BP – for eluvial one. Archaeological material from Middle Paleolithic site Mariampil V technically, typologically, culturally and stratigraphically is completely similar to layer III of Yezupil I and layer IV of Mariampil I that witnessed the presence of a quite large centre of habitation of Neanderthal communities in this region.
