Marine resources exploitation in continental Patagonia coast: vertebrate remains from Punta Entrada and Monte León deposits (Santa Cruz, Argentina)

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 4

Abstract

The results of vertebrate zooarchaeological studies performed on three archaeological deposits, Punto 96 (Punta Entrada), Cabeza de León 1 and Conchero 4 (Monte León National Park), south Santa Cruz river mouth, on the Atlantic coast, are presented. The assemblages, dated in the last 2000 years, have different formation histories, although they share a clear exploitation of marine resources, particularly on pinnipeds. At Punto 96, sea lion puppies of one and a half month old were recovered suggesting the presence of a breeding colony which does not exist at present. Punto 96 as well as Conchero 4 shows bones of two pinniped species (Otaria flavescens and Arctocephalus australis) which could be indicating colonies were mixed. Isotopic data taken from human bones from the same area suggest a diet based mainly on terrestrial resources with a very low intake of marine resources. This unagreement among these two lines of evidence led us to postulate that human presence in the coast was not continuous and took place at different time intervals which were also variable through time and could be interrupted for several years.
