MASS POLITICAL WORK IN THE WESTERN REGIONS OF UKRAINIAN SSR IN TIMES OF “DEVELOPED SOCIALIST SOCIETY”

Abstract

The article (based on the analysis of a wide range of historical sources and literature) describes the mechanisms, forms and methods of planting communist ideology in everyday life of Soviet citizens, the specifics and features of the introduction of party propaganda in the conditions of the western regions and the Soviet way of life, control of foreign citizens, the struggle with religious consciousness , the introduction of Soviet rituals, the formation of a “new man – a scoop” on the example of the western regions of the Ukrainian SSR. It has been proved that the monopolistic domination of the communist ideology became more flexible, not as brutal as it was during the Stalinist period. It was emphasized that the Soviet authorities saw a serious threat in spreading of the religious world outlook and “nationalist views”. Authorities tried to discredit the church in different ways and fought with all the possible manifestations of “Ukrainian nationalism”. Article reveals the official strategy which was followed by Party and Soviet functionaries, while caring out the mass-political work among the population, which had to overcome the “negative phenomena of the past bourgeois formation” and to educate “the new Soviet man – the builder of communism”. Article determines the specificity of the mentality of the inhabitants of the western region of the Ukrainian SSR as well as the efforts of the republican and local authorities in order to strengthen ideological and political work among the local population. All spheres of social and political life were permeated with an excessive ideology and total control. “Russification” remained an important direction of state policy but it primarily affected urban residents. It is proved that the official policy of the Communist Party government has not achieved the desired results. Ukrainian language and eternal spiritual values have been saved by the conservative village, deep national-cultural traditions of the local population were actively manifested during the deployment of democratic processes in the late 80’s of the twentieth century.
