The article is dedicated to the principles (fundamental) notions such as modality, its types (real, unreal) unreality, categories and means of expression. The notion of modality has been used in different ways in different sciences and also in linguistics. Many different kinds of modal interpretations have been observed and studied, resulting in a variety of typologies. What follows below is one of the many ways that modality has been classified. The aim of our article is a complex analysis of means and shades of ways which reflects the content of unreality in the English language, their systematization and generalization. Modality is a meaning category that contains connection of an action with reality / unreality, or shows speaker’s attitude to the action. Speaker not only transfer information but also expresses personal assessment. Unreal not related to reality; existing in imagination only. Unreality indicates some degree of lack of confidence by the speaker. It is marked differently by tenses, modal words, modal verbs, conditional sentences and subjunctive mood. A variety of forms expressing unreality in English is introduced. The first way of expressing unreality is modal words which render subjective attitude to the utterance. The main way of expressing modal meaning between a subject of an action and an action is modal verbs. The question of modal verbs’ usage and their meaning is very difficult as they can represent different modal meanings in different conditions of the context. The usage of different types of modal verbs and clauses through analysis of grammar is also presented in the article.
