Memories of school in the Polish People's Republic. A study with the use of narrative techniques

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to check how people remembered Polish elementary school of 1952–1989, which was the Polish People's Republic period, and what school experiences they considered the best, worst and typical experiences of that period. We were interested in the subjective memory of school and the transmission of this memory as part of family and personal accounts. A question was asked about what threads (thematic categories) would dominate in memories handed down in families or in close personal relationships - that is about such a memory that is the object of intergenerational transmission. At our request, 95 people, including 48 women and 47 men, told their family members (children, grandchildren or relatives), close acquaintances or psychology students their memories of the times when they went to elementary school during the Polish People's Republic. The average age of people who gave interviews was 50.8; 41 percent of the participants went to elementary school in the sixties or earlier, 46 percent – in the seventies, and 13 percent - in the eighties. The study was conducted with the use of a semi-structured narrative interview based on Dan McAdams' interview technique The Life Story Interview. A qualitative analysis of the results and a thematic analysis of the content were carried out. The happiest memories most often referred to interactions with peers, a sense of community in the group, achievements and getting on well with teachers. The most unpleasant memories referred to teacher violence (including hitting), fear and a sense of injustice. The findings are discussed in the context of the literature on school memories from other periods and other places and in the context of the specific nature of the memory of the Polish People's Republic period.
