Mentality of the Ukrainian People and Processes of State Building

Abstract

In the article, through the prism of Ukrainian mentality, the processes of state building in modern Ukraine are examined; attention іs paid to the peculiarities of the territorial, cultural and economic development and identity of the ethnic evolution of Ukrainians as a nation, without which it would be impossible to understand the essence of the latest nation-state formation. As a specific way of perceiving and understanding by the ethnos of its inner world and external circumstances, the mentality, together with material factors, integrates the people, the nation into a single whole, opens the way for the construction of an effective state. Natural-geographical conditions, unfavorable historical circumstances, the interruption of Ukrainian history and statehood have affected the formation of Ukrainian people mentality, of the national self-awareness and the ability of the leading strata to state building. It should also be borne in mind that in the era of European nations’ active formation, the Ukrainian people for a long time remained in a state of statelessness. It significantly slowed down, and in some historical periods even stopped the process of maturation of the ethnic group to those political, economic, social and cultural forms that were the most optimal and necessary for the development and functioning of the communities of such a level. Therefore, the consideration of the mentality peculiarities of the Ukrainians is a prerequisite and a guarantee of the successful creation of a democratic state and, accordingly, an increase in the well-being and spiritual and psychological well-being of its citizens. It is substantiated that the successful creation of a state-political organism in a new cycle of national history will depend on the extent to which the Ukrainian state idea enters the consciousness of Ukrainian citizens, adequately reflects the essence of the mentality and the peculiarities of mentality of the Ukrainian people. The unity of the nation as an internal, spiritual attraction of Ukrainians to unity is the key to successful state-building
