MENTATIVE FEATURES IN SKITZE ESSAYS

Abstract

The following article is about discursive practices of skitze essays in modern Ukrainian literature. Skitze is positioned among other essay types. The concept of skitze essay as the one belonging to mentative essays is analyzed. The following features are listed: lyricism does not have to dominate over epic features: lyricism gives place to philosophical features, meditation, reflexivity; descriptiveness becomes less important than mentative, it can only be partial, resembling general ideas that are included in the mentative part; events (stories, mini-plots) are totally beyond the event that is a narrative and a mediation at the same time, thus ending up in a pre-reflexive situation; mediation is formed thickly, with a high level of concentration, while exogitator (meditator in the essay) tend to be aphoristic and precise, because the size of the work does not let him or her prolong this process. Moreover, a full stop at the end of the skitze is not a full stop at the end of the thought. Skitze features as a type of mentative essay are analyzed based on Ivan Luchuk’s works (compilations «Some sort of poetic skitze», «Literature Jazz», «Some poetics studies »). Conclusions are made about the specifics of idea compression, concentration and reduction of meditation space in skitze as a work of literature. Emphasis is made on the thickness of ideas and images, senses concentration, mentative filling of skitze in I. Luchuk’s skitze about poetry and poets. They represent a different way of collision, differences of opinions, comparison of thoughts described in a shortened way. It can be explained to a certain extent by the author’s way of thinking, as well as by the fact that broad and long meditations about a certain object had been already tried by the author in other philological genres, such as a critical editorial, scientific article, poetry compilation, compilation of large essays. Therefore, skitze is also one of the various formats for meditation, as well as another language practice to express what had been expressed before.
