Abstract
The article discusses various aspects of the functioning of youth organizations in Zakarpattia in 1938–1944, such as «Levente», scouts, student organizations. The source base of the article consists of the documents of the State Archive of the Zakarpattian Region, the Hungarian National Archive and the National Archive of the Czech Republic, as well as materials of the regional press (the Rusinophile newspaper «Nedelya», the Russophile newspaper «Russkoe slovo», Hungarian-language official publications), which were first put into scientific circulation. The activities of pro-government organizations («Levente», «Organization of Greek Catholic Youth», etc.) are considered in the context of the official course of «Ugro-Rusinism», aimed to support local Ruthenian identity in return for other national projects and cultivation among Eastern Slavic population of the region the idea of complete loyalty to the Hungarian state. In addition, these institutions («Levente», first of all) were an effective means of gradual magyarization of the inhabitants of the region. The aspirations of the Hungarian authorities were aimed at eliminating or maximally limiting the activities of those cultural and educational organizations whose members adhered to Russophile and, especially, pro-Ukrainian positions. However, the Russophile organization «Central Union of Russian University Students» had a rather strong influence on Zakarpattian youth, who studied at universities in Hungary. The institutions created under the auspices of the authorities, designed to promote the ideas of «Ugro-Rusinism», however, did not enjoy the support of local youth. The foundations of the national policy of Budapest were obvious. Only care about the international image did not allow the Hungarian authorities to implement radical projects of assimilating the inhabitants of Zakarpattia.
