METADRAMATIC POETICS OF IGOR KOSTETSKY’S PLAY “TWINS WILL MEET AGAIN”

Abstract

Igor Kostetsky is a bright representative of the Ukrainian diaspora literature of the twentieth century. His drama has a tendency to experiments and innovations. This was promoted by author’s theatrical education and practice, his consist- ent interest in the achievements of the European, first of all the German theater, and the deep conviction that Ukrainian drama needs to be updated. The purpose of this research is to analyze the author’s implementation of the metadramatic form of Igor Kostetsky’s play "Twins Will Meet Again" on the figurative, compositional and conceptual levels. This is perhaps the first author in the Ukrainian literature, who consciously uses the form of metadrama. Self-reflexive poetics of the play is achieved by means of numerous artistic means. In particular, "theatricalization of theater" in the work is created with the help of the masquerade topos, dressing up and masking, aimed at actualizing the problem of identity in a situation of permanent doubling. At the character level, metadramatic poetics is embodied through the image of the Prologue, who, among other things, serves as a narrator and trikster, irregating the flow of the plot and inducing an open reception. No less important for the creation of metadramatic form are the pairs of dancers. In their dialogues, as in the Prologue’s replicas, directly or indirectly bright theatrical codes such as red dominoes, harlequins, dance macabre, etc. appear. The experimental character of the play makes it possible to combine the aesthetic elements of the European dramatic conceptions of the twentieth century in its structure. Among others we should outline Pirandello’s aesthetics, Brecht’s alienation, Sartre’s theater of situations, etc. It is proved that on the example of the main intrigue of the text: the choice of Teresa in the situation of endless doubling, the author creates a special scenic space "if", which became the core of his own conception of the theater of probabilities.
