Phonetic parameters of vowel phoneme allophones of German and Ukrainian languages

Abstract

The article deals with a comparative analysis of the implementation of the vowel allophones in modern German and Ukrainian on the material of interview audiotexts with representatives of the cultural and political elite in Germany and Ukraine. The modi¿ cation phenomena of German vowels are most common in the unstressed position at the junction of morphemes and phonetic words. In particular, the common ones are the duration loss, the raise offset, the centralization and delabialization of labial vowels. In addition, a narrowing trend of Ukrainian vowels has been set, motivated by various positional factors. As a typological feature of Ukrainian vocalism appears the inÀ uence of surrounding palatalized consonants. The difference in the quantity and quality parameters between stressed and unstressed vowels is not so strongly expressed in Ukrainian as in German by exception of the phonemes /i/, /э/, /ѓ/. In general, the greatest degree of accommodation of Ukrainian vowels is determined by the place of neighbouring consonant formation, or rather by how closely is the articulation of a vowel and a neighbouring consonant. The inÀ uence of velar consonants on the vowels /э/ and /u/ is less than that of impact apicals. On the other hand palatalized coronal consonants show greater inÀ uence on back vowels than on front vowels.
