Abstract
Work of institutions has been the object of many investigations in the eld of humanities for a long period of time. More recently (since the end of the 0th century), there has been a linguistic turn into the study of institutions with a lot of language focused research of how power and discourse may function in various specic institutional and organized settings as social institutions have the power to shape people’s thinking and understanding of the world. Discourses are not equal in their coverage of time and space. The article focuses on the problem of delimitating institutional discourse (ID) in the modern system of discursive practices. Taken into consideration communicative, cognitive and social characteristics of the ID, it is dened as the hierarchical setting of communicators and their communicative interaction combined with the common institutional territory, status-role rules of behaviour, common models of social and professional knowledge, and denite communicative strategies and tactics. A description of eight theoretical-methodological approaches to the given type of discourse is provided. The following constituents of ID should be taken into consideration: status-role and situational-communicative characteristics, localized chronotope, communicative environment, conventional aims within a social institute, ritual values, means of communication, strategies, genres, and precedent phenomena.
