Modal Analysis of a Semi-Closed Impeller of Centrifugal Water Pump

Abstract
Centrifugal pump impellers are high speed rotating components vulnerable to vibrations resulting in the failure of the system pump eventually. A modal analysis of the impeller is very important in the design and development of impellers, to prevent premature failure. In this paper, a radial semi-closed impeller was analysed by the numerical method, FEM. The first ten modes were extracted. The first natural frequency of the original model was found to be 122.98 HZ which is very difference from 24.15 HZ of the pump operating speed by a margin of 80.4%. As per HIS clause 9.6.4.4, the first natural frequency should be 10% above or below the pump operating speed. So, the impeller is very suitable to use at the operating speed and critical displacement in blade and resonance phenomena will not occur.
