Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 5
Abstract
One of the important objectives of development is to reduce the unequal opportunities for the people in terms of utilizing the resources, achievements and facilities. Among other major goals are social development and an improved quality of life for the members in a society, too. The main objective of this study, therefore, is to measure and evaluate the formal indices of development in Shooshtar compared with the other cities in the same province (Khoozestan) in terms of their access to educational facilities, healthcare centers and socio-economic provisions and against what the citizens take for granted about these parameters. The research design is descriptive in nature. The data, on the one hand, are collected through using Cochran`s formula and the questionnaires are distributed among the sample size (n=384), who are the citizens in Shooshtar over the age of 18, using a cluster sampling. On the other hand, the data input from the Iranian Center for Statistics on different formal indices of development are used as well. A two-variable analysis is used to test the hypotheses and a numerical taxonomy is used to determine the rankings of the cities. The findings indicate that Shooshtar is ranked lower than the other cities based on the indices of development with respect to the national and provincial measures. Although the city is ranked lower in terms of the economic, welfare and health parameters on the national and provincial scales, it is ranked above medium in cultural and educational variables based on the national and provincial measures.
