Monitoring ichtiofauny rzek – cele i problemy

Journal Title: Roczniki Naukowe Polskiego Związku Wędkarskiego - Year 2014, Vol 27, Issue

Abstract

Monitoring of fish fauna involves regular, cyclic measurements and observations of ecosystems or their individual components, i.e. species and their populations. Being one of the most vulnerable and dynamic biological systems, freshwater ichthyofauna undergoes significant modifications mainly due to changes in water quality and the alterations of the river bed. The aim of the current study was to highlight the importance of changes occurring in fish faunas and to predict the direction of changes in response to emerging threats. The design of appropriate monitoring surveys, which adequately assess the status of fish populations, is of great importance. To predict trends in spatial and temporal variations in fish populations correctly, we need to refer to the whole structure of the ichthyofauna of a riverine system. This was confirmed by the analysis of changes in distribution ranges and exchange of occurrence sites of fish species composing ichthyofauna in the Skrwa Prawa and Słupia Rivers. Analysis of species rarity appears to be a very useful tool for this purpose. The authors indicate that the holistic approach to a riverine system is of central importance in fish fauna monitoring, and rather more important than the reference sites approach.
