Mortality and hospital stay related to occupational trauma treated during the weekend in the emergency service, Bogotá 2007-2010.

Journal Title: Revista Cuarzo - Year 2017, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

Objective. The results of acute occupational trauma (TOA) may be conditioned to the industrial development and the time of the week in which it occurred; Mortality and hospital stay (HE) of workers who presented TOA at different times of the week were compared. Methods. Retrospective descriptive study, in which the administrative database of workers attended by TOA was used, between January 2007 and December 2010, in a Level III Clinic in Bogotá, the median hospital stay (HE) and the risk of mortality (OR; 95% CI) in patients treated for TAO during the week (ES) and the weekend (FdS); the frequency of events was weighted (p) by the days ES-p (4 days) and FdS-p (3 days). Results. 65,169 medical records were evaluated, 4295 and 13071 TOA occurred in FdS-p and ES-p, respectively; TOA predominated in men, young adults (median age 30 to 33 years). The median of EH ES was 0.43 hours (h) and in FdS 0.48 h (p: 0.000). TOA occurred in workers aged 45-64 years (3.47; 1.76-6.76), attended at night (3.27; 1.64-6.40), in FdS (4.57; 1, 25-18.4) and at night-FdS (4.49; 1.64-14.0) presented the highest risk of mortality. Conclution. Workers treated by TOA during FdS have higher HE, risk of death and lower frequency of visits to Specialized Medicine than those seen in ES. Institutional protocols for the care of OCD could consider this effect, to provide safe and equitable care, regardless of the time of care.
