Możliwości diagnostyczne i leczenie ratowników medycznych i pielęgniarek w Szpitalnym Oddziale Ratunkowym

Abstract
Current legal regulations include the competences of paramedics and nurses in terms of diagnostic and treatment actions. These actions performed by paramedics and nurses at a hospital emergency ward independently may find its application in making the process of patient admission more efficient. It is essential on account of the inefficiency of these units of Emergency Medical Services, which results from a big number of patients who are not in a life-threatening condition. The proposed solution concerns diagnostic actions performed within triage and based on point-of-care testing and preliminary pharmacology. It would apply to the group of patients who, on the grounds on the triage priority defined by a paramedic or nurse, come to a hospital emergency ward without the need of implementing expanded specialised diagnostics. This is the most numerous group of patients with the 4. – green – priority defined according to the Emergency Severity Index (ESI). Performing additional diagnostic and treatment actions within triage would not generate health risks to patients and would allow the medical staff of emergency departments to use their potential in order to improve the operation of these units. However, in the current formal and legal situation, the possibility to introduce the proposed solutions turns out to be unreal.
