Multicentre studies in which the Department of Cardiology of the Postgraduate Medical School participated – their contribution to contemporary treatment of acute coronary syndromes

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary artery disease and its most acute phase myocardial infarction, are prevalent causes of mortality in developed populations. Contemporary treatment of acute coronary syndrome is based on the guidelines written by experts on the basis of multicentre randomized studies. In this paper a selection of international studies is presented including those which prof. Leszek Ceremużyński and prof. Andrzej Budaj participated as members of their steering committees and national coordinates. The following international studies are discussed: INTER-HEART, ISIS-3, ISIS-4, CLARITY-TIMI 28, CURE, CURRENT-OASIS 7, PLATO, ExTRACT-TIMI 25, OASIS-5, OASIS-6, FUTURA/OASIS-8, MERLIN-TIMI 36. The projects concerned the following topics: risk factors of myocardial infarction, reperfusion therapy, antiplatelet therapy, antithrombotic therapy improving prognosis in myocardial infarction. Independent studies were also conducted by our Department: the Clinic the following studies are presented: PAT, Pol-GIK, ARAMI i MIVIT. In these studies the efficacy and safety of amiodarone, glucose, insulin and potassium, l-arginine and antioxidant vitamins C and A in patients with acute myocardial infarction were evaluated. A large group of physicians and nurses from many collaborating centers in Poland performed a significant scientific. All the participants profoundly influenced the development of contemporary cardiology.
