Muscle fibre types, fat deposition and fatty acid profile of Casertana versus Large White pig
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2012, Vol 30, Issue 1
Abstract
Used were 8 castrated males and 8 entire females of indigenous Casertana and Large White pigs, 4 animals of each breed. In Longissimus dorsi (LD) and Psoas major (PM) muscles the morphometric characteristics of FG (fast glycolytic ), FOG (fast oxidative glycolytic) and SO (slow oxidative) fibre types was performed and their percentage determined. Determined was also the area of adipocytes from internal and external layer of adipose tissue from backfat, shoulder, dorsal and loin regions. The SO were larger than FG and FOG fibres (P< 0.05-0.001) and the size of FG fibres was significantly different among the two breeds considered, higher in Large White pigs and lower in Casertana. LD muscle was characterized by FG and SO fibres larger than PM (P<0.001). Males had fibres larger than females in both muscles and breeds. The dorsal region had bigger adipocytes in both the pig breeds (P<0.05-0.01). In comparison with the outer fat layer, the inner and middle layers showed more developed adipocytes. Differences in fatty acid composition were observed between breeds. Particularly, Casertana pigs showed higher level of essential fatty acids than did Large White. The results showed the particular characteristics of the Casertana breed as compared to pig lines intensively selected for growth efficiency.

Emotional response of young race horses to a transfer from a familiar to an unfamiliar environment
The aim of this study was to measure emotional arousal in young race horses as expressed by heart rate (HR) during routine situations of grooming, hoof cleaning, and while at rest, having been transported from the enviro...
Selection of reference genes for gene expression studies in porcine hepatic tissue using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction
Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) has become an indispensable technique for accurate determination of gene expression in variety of samples. Accurate and reliable quantification, however, depends...
In vitro supplementation of lycopene to bovine spermatozoa: effects on motility, viability and superoxide production
This study was designed to assess the effects of lycopene (LYC) on motility, viability and superoxide production of bovine spermatozoa during short-term (0h, 2h, 6h) and long-term (12h, 24h) in vitro culture periods. Sem...
Effect of plant protein supplementation on in vitro development of porcine embryos
The aim of the study was to investigate the possibility of using plant protein (PP) substitute instead of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the culture of porcine embryos in vitro. The experiment was done on pig zygotes coll...
Seasonal variation in fatty acid composition of cow milk in relation to the feeding system
The fatty acid (FA) composition of bulk milk fat was examined on three dairy farms applying the seasonal pasture and on two farms applying the permanently indoor silage feeding. The seasonal variation in the content of m...
