Myelodysplastic syndromes – current diagnostic approach, classification and treatment Part I: Diagnosis, classification an prognostic stratification of myelodysplastic syndromes
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 6
Abstract
Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of acquired heterogeneous clonal disorders of hematopoietic stem cell characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, refractory cytopenias and an increased risk of transformation into acute myeloid leukemia. This work presents recent views on diagnostic work-up, classification and prognostic stratification of myelodysplastic syndromes. In order to establish diagnosis, as well as to identify prognostic factors blood morphology tests including peripheral blood smear assessment with light microscope, and cytological, histopathological, cytochemical and cytogenetic marrow examinations are required. Precise diagnostic criteria according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and risk stratification based on the International Prognostic System Score (IPSS) and WHO based Prognostic Scoring System (WPSS) are presented.
