Najnowsze badania archeologiczne w bazylice pw. św. Jadwigi i św. Bartłomieja w Trzebnicy

Abstract

Archaeological research in the former monastery church was carried between March 2011 and the end of July 2015. The work took place in connection with installation of new heating and floor replacement. In four years whole the northern aisle (without St John’s Chapel) as well as the nave and the southern aisle to the transept’s entry were explored. Construction work was done at a large scale which made it possible to find and identify remains hidden under the basilica’s floor, most of which to that moment were still unknown. These artefacts were mainly associated with the Baroque funeral culture and were found in crypts, tombs and ordinary burials. In total six crypts, two tombs and four graves were discovered. An unusual discovery took place on the site, of richly decorated sarcophagus of von Arnim family from 1661. Four test trenches at the church's foundation and foundations of pillars were dug, which helped determine the size and construction of the building. Some relics from nuns’ gallery and stone-brick wall dating from the beginning of the church construction were also recorded. The discovery of a completely unknown passage under the foundation of the church towards the monastery may be considered a sensational one. It led to a room which served as a cellarium and was used by priests and nuns. Apart from immovable objects, 152 movable artefacts were found, such as stone products, construction ceramics and pottery, coins, jewellery, medallions and crosses, rosaries, finger rings, book covers and fragments of clothing.
