Nasal rhinosporidiosis: clinical case presentation

Abstract

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease with involvement of mucosae, predominantly nasal and nasopharynx, and less frequently ocular conjunctiva and lacrimal sack. Rhinosporidium actually is considered a cianobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa. Most cases have been reported in India and Sri Lanka, affecting young people between 20 and 40 years and male gender. In our country, the mayor incidence has been reported in Portuguesa and Barinas states. We present case of 15 years old with nasal rhinosporidiosis. Histopathology study was made with results mucosae hyperplasia and presence of cystic structures occupied by endospores inflammatory cells with various degrees of severity. Treatment was surgical resection with satisfactory outcome.
