Native language as a training base for bilingual formation: transposition and interference

Abstract

The study examines the role of the native (Ukrainian) language in the process of formation of schoolchildren’s linguistic competence. Attention is paid to the speci¿ cs of acquisition by them of closely related (Russian) language, and in particular, to the phenomenon of positive transfer of knowledge and skills of the native language system into the related one – the transposition, as well as to the cross-language interference promoting the subconscious replacement of facts of the second language by phenomena of the native language, that leads to violation of the norms at different levels of linguistic system (phonetic, lexical, phraseological, word-formative, morphological and syntactic). Except apparent interference, which occurs while studying closely related languages, the attention is paid to the hidden interference, consisting of students’ effort to avoid the elements that are unique to a second language system and have no place in the native language, which impoverishes their speech. With the aim of teaching school children Russian language norms of different levels the author of the article offers his own linguistic and didactic patterns of exercises and tasks tested in practice by himself and aimed to overcome the interfering inÀ uence of the native language to the second language system
