Altered Membrane Potential and Electrolyte in Sickle Cell Anemia
Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Aim: This study has been to evaluate the level of membranepotential and electrolyte in sickle cell diseasepatients. Material and methods: 100 sickle cell patientsin steady state ages 5 to 30 years attending GeneralHospital Owerri were used in the study while 100normal subjects (HbAA) were used as control. Also30 HbSS in crisis have been involved. Results: Theresults obtained showed that the level of membranepotential was significantly lower in sickle cell anemiaas compared to the controls. Also, the level of the electrolytewas found significantly decreased in HbSS whencompared with HbAA at P<0.05. Conclusion: Themembrane potential translates to energy which meansthat there is less energy in sickle cell disease which islinked to electrolyte imbalance. Hence people withsickle disease should be monitored closely for their electrolytesto avoid crisis.

Role of C-peptide in Altered Lipid Profile among Apparently Healthy Adults of Vijayapura City, Karnataka
Background: C-peptide is produced in equimolar concentration during insulin production as inactive molecule by beta islet cells of Langerhans. C-peptide is most useful biomarker of endogenous insulin production. Aim...
Correlation Between Insulin Resistance and Homocysteine in Hypothyroid Patients
Background: Hypothyroidism has been associated with disorders of glucose and insulin metabolism involving defective insulin secretion in response to glucose, hyperinsulinemia, altered peripheral glucose disposal and insu...
Ageing and Pulse Wave Velocity in Relation to Serum Nitric Oxide
Background: The Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) is an important marker of arterial stiffness. Age related changes of arterial stiffness in relation to PWV and endothelial derived Nitric Oxide (NOx) are least explored. Aim and...
