ANTOBODY RESPONSE OF ACHYRANTHES ASPERA LINN. TO AEROMONAS HYDROPHILA IN OREOCHROMIS MOSSAMBICUS
Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 4
Abstract
ABSTRACT Fish is the cheapest and most easily digestible animal protein and was obtained from natural sources from time immemorial for consumption by human beings. Fish culture can be taken as a major economic activity in the country as its supports nutrition, employment and foreign exchange. But they have intimate contacts with their environment which can contain more concentration of microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi etc. Diseases in fish caused by pathogenic bacteria, particularly Aeromonas hydrophila, are most widespread. Septicaemia caused by motile aeromonads is a ubiquitous problem that affects fishes found in warm, cool and cold fresh water around the world. The bacterium, A. hydrophila has been associated with disease in carp, eels, milkfish, channel catfish, tilapia and ayu, related diseases in salmonids. Intensive aquaculture practices have led to a growing interest in understanding fish diseases, so that they can be prevented or treated. India is a rich source of traditional herbs with more than 500 listed plant species many endowed with broad spectrum antimicrobial properties. Certain medicinal plants (herbs) possessing immunostimulant effects, as discussed below, have been used experimentally as well as clinically to treat various fish diseases and to control infections in them. The specific objectives of the present investigation was to screen the water extracts of Achyranthes aspera for their immunostimulatory effect on the antibody response to heat killed A. hydrophila in O. mossambicus was tested using Bacterial agglutination assay. Generally the lower doses of leaf extracts administered group significantly stimulated the antibody response when compared with control. Key words: Immunostimulants, Achyranthes aspera ,Oreochromis mossambicus.
