Phytochemical and Antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract of Mucuna urens (Okobo) Seeds

Abstract

The phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of the ethanol crude extract of the seeds of Mucuna urens (Okobo) against some human pathogens: Candida albicans, Streptococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Coliform bacilli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using agar well diffusion method were investigated. The phytochemical analysis of the seeds of Mucuna urens were carried out in different solvents: petroleum extract of the crude sample indicated the presence of saponins, steroids and alkaloids; the ethylacetate residue showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and steroids and the ethanol extract showed significant presence of saponins, flavonoids, steroids and alkaloids. The ethanol residue was acidified with 20% HCl and extracted with chloroform and 10% sodium hydroxide. This crude basic extract concentrations of 100mg/ml, 50mg/ml, 25mg/ml, 12.5mg/ml and 6.25mg/ml respectively were used against the susceptibility patterns of the test microorganisms. The results showed the ethanol extract inhibited the growth of Candida albicans, Streptococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Coliform bacilli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6.25mg/ml. This observation was in agreement with the presence of saponins, flavonoids and alkaloids in this extract. Standard discs of amoxycilline, orazone and levofloxacine were used as reference antibiotics in the study.
