Cottonseed (Gossypium arboreum) Oil Biodiesel
Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 1
Abstract
Oil was extracted from Cottonseed by soxhlet extraction method and it gave an oil content of 20.2%. Preliminary characterization gave very low free fatty acid value hence it was transesterified without pretreatment using methanol and sodium hydroxide as catalyst. The colour of the oil was like black used engine oil and it had very pungent odour. However, after transesterification, the colour of the biodiesel was light yellow while the glycerol was brown. The fatty acid profile was determined by HP 6890 Gas Chromatography analyzer and showed that the oil was 89.47% unsaturation. The oil and biodiesel were characterized and the properties of the biodiesel are similar to those of diesel hence it was concluded that it can be used as alternative fuel for diesel engines. The high cetane number of 89.49 will allow the engine burn the fuel more efficiently with reduced hazardous exhaust emissions.
