Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2016, Vol 13, Issue 3
Abstract
The study examined the profitability of maize production in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Using purposive sampling, data were collected from a total sample of 120 maize farmers and subjected to descriptive statistics and gross margin analyses. The descriptive statistics showed that 41.7% of the farmers were between 31 and 40 years of age. It was found that 74% of the farmers had formal education ranging from primary to tertiary levels. About 31 % of the farmers had between 11 and 15 years of farming experience. The average farm size was 2.55ha, while the average yield was 932kg per hectare. The average variable cost, average fixed cost and gross margin per hectare were and N31, 437.22, N4, 300.00 and N23, 910.78, respectively. The gross margin analysis indicated that fertilizer had accounted for 67.9 % of the total cost of production. As a result of this situation, the study recommended better access to fertilizer and other inputs as well as credits which would go a long way in reducing production costs and raising efficiency in maize production.
