Ecto and Endo parasites in Labeo rohita, Major carp (Hamilton) In Krishna River segment in Sangli district

Abstract

Fishes are the staple food for many in coastal region of India, including Maharashtra. Krishna River in Sangli District is one of the rich sources of freshwater fishes. The river situated in Latitude16° 51' 26.48" N and Longitude 74° 33' 25.16" E. Most commonly observed freshwater fishes are Labeo, Mrigal and Catla. Labeo rohita is most demandable one among them. Hence the study was constrained to this species. Various kinds of skin diseases, weight reduction, and lack of palatability and long duration of maturity are some of the problems faced by fish farmers in this area concerned with L.rohita. A casual discussion with the local fisherman revealed that they encountered all these problems and find difficulty in maintaining their daily earning. Total 500 fishes were analyzed for both ectoparasites and endoparasites. The result shows that labeo was infected with many ciliophorans, moneogeneans, cnidarians, nematodes and trematod parasites predominantly on gills, skin and body surface, and intestine, stomach.
