EFFECT OF ETHANOL LEAF EXTRACT OF TAMARINDUS INDICA IN CARBON TETRACHLORIDE INDUCED HEPATIC AND RENAL INJURY

Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

ABSTRACT Tamarindus indica leaves have been used in folk medicine as antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, a digestive aid, carminative, and recently hepatoprotective activity. Currently, there is little toxicological finding concerning the safety of Tamarindus indica in northern Nigeria. The aim of this study was to ascertain the impact of this plant on the liver and kidneys in rats.Fresh leaves of Tamarindus indica were collected within University of Maiduguri campus and were identified by a botanist in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Sciences, University of Maiduguri. The leaves were air dried, powdered and extracted using 95% ethanol. The extract was used for the phytochemical screening, acute and subchronic toxicity studies. The extract of Tamarindus indica leaves was found to contain some phytochemical compounds of pharmacological interest and has relative degree of safety. Carbon tetrachloride significantly increased the levels of most of the biochemical parameters used in assessing hepatic and renal functions in this study (p<0.05). However, the activity of the extract at the highest tested dose was able to reduce the significant increase in the levels of biochemical parameters that were raised due to carbon tetrachloride.Tamarindus indica extract was found to protect the liver and kidneys from carbon tetrachloride induced injury, thereby justifying continuous use of this plant as a food supplement and medicinal purposes. Key words: Tamarindus indica, Carbon tetrachloride, Ethanol.
