EPITHELIOID LEIOMYOMA OF UTERUS – A CASE REPORT
Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 18
Abstract
Epithelioid smooth-muscle tumors of the gastrointestinal tract have been well studied; similar tumors of the uterus have been subject of only a few reports. Here is a case of epithelioid leiomyoma detected histopathologically in a 65 year old presenting with bleeding per vagina. There are 3 basic subtypes in uterine epithelioid leiomyoma which are leiomyoblastoma, clear cell leiomyoma and plexiform leiomyoma. Mixture of various types are common, hence the designation “epithelioid” for all of them. The behaviour of epithelioid leiomyoma with large size(>6cm), moderate to severe atypia(2-4 mitotic figures/10high power fields ) and necrosis is not well established, such tumors should be classified in the uncertain malignant potential category, and careful follow up is necessary. Neoplasms with more than 5 mitotic figures /10 high power fields metastasize with sufficient frequency and should be regarded as epithelioid leiomyosarcoma. There is no consensus on differentiating features with PEComa and no consensus on predictive features for malignancy in epithelioid leiomyoma, hence requiring large number of studies to establish criteria
