EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF GAULTHERIA FRAGRATISSIMA Wall
Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
ABSTRACT Antioxidants are compounds that inhibit or delay the oxidation of other molecules by inhibiting the initiation or propagation of oxidizing chain reactions Current research is now directed towards natural antioxidants originated from plants due to safe therapeutics. Gaultheria fragratissima is used in Indian traditional medicine for a wide range of various ailments. To understand the mechanism of pharmacological actions, antioxidant properties of the G. fragratissima leaf extract were tested using standard in vitro models. The methanol extract of G. fragratissima exhibited strong scavenging effect on 1, 1-diphenyl-2- picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, metal chelating and ABTS radical scavenging assay. The free radical scavenging effect of G.fragratissima extract was comparable with that of the reference antioxidants. The data obtained in the present study suggests that the extract of G. fragratissima leaves have potent antioxidant activity against free radicals, prevent oxidative damage to major biomolecules and afford significant protection against oxidative damage. Key words: ABTS assay, DPPH assay, Metal chelating activity, Antioxidant.
