GASTROINTESTINAL STROMAL TUMOUR – REVISITED
Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 12
Abstract
Although less common than epithelial neoplasms, mesenchymal tumours of GI tract are not rare. The main bulk of these mesenchymal tumours is formed by Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). However they are not extensively documented, they are underestimated, poorly understood and inadequately treated for various reasons, particularly at peripheral centers in India. The gravity of the problem increases further as these tumours respond poorly to conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
