Impact of elevated soil and air temperature on plants growth, yield and physiological interaction: a critical review

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2016, Vol 14, Issue 3

Abstract

High temperature episode becoming to be more severe for plant growth and grain yield, this may affect the global food security. Acute soil temperature also affects microbial activities, closely associated with plant growth. This review focuses on the impact of elevated temperature on physiological aspect, growth and yield of crops specially cereals. Manifold knowledge gaps on interaction of high temperature with crop growth are highlighted. Temperature is pivotal factor in plant living process, like seed germination, seedling emergence, root health, growth and development. Temperature virtually constant below 10 m soil depth, but acute temperature or frequent fluctuation of soil temperature affect the soil microorganisms, plant growth as well. Soil and air temperature influences the physiological process like photosynthesis, respiration, rubisco activities of plants and crop yield. Aside from this elevated mean temperature reduce root biomass, grain number even compelled to be quiescent for metabolic reactions occasionally. Grain yield and harvest index down regulate sharply with extreme episode of temperature. In cereals fertilization and grain setting is most sensitive to the elevated temperature at mid anthesis resulting considerable yield reduction. Many crop modelers speculated that extreme high temperature may frequently experienced with crop production due to climate change. Future research outlook should be on physiological, molecular and microbiological aspects to make comprehension of how elevated temperature might affect plant growth, biomass production and yield to ensure the food security and sustainability.
