IN VITRO EFFECT OF PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY ON DENTAL BIOFIM

Abstract
The goal of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro conditions of the effect obtained when applying photodynamic therapy on cariogenic bacterial strains in dental biofilm. The following solutions were tested as photosensitivity agents: methylene blue 0.5% and 5% anthocyanin extract (pH 8.0 to 9.0), erythrosine 0.5% and 5% anthocyanin extract (pH 4.5 - 5.0). As a catalyst, we used titanium dioxide suspension of 1%. There was conducted a comparison of the bactericidal effect of applying photosensitivity substances together with the catalyst. The irradiation was performed with LED devices of 625-635 nm and 420-480 nm, for 30 and 60 seconds. The data obtained from this study demonstrate the high efficiency of applying anthocyanin extract as a photosensitising substance in photodynamic therapy, which ensures a total destruction of the strains of cariogenic microorganisms.
