Measurement and simulation of strain fields around crack tips under mixed-mode fatigue loading
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 33
Abstract
For various configurations examined in a series of fatigue experiments on thin-walled tubes under tension and torsion, the experimental results – crack path, crack growth life, near crack tip deformations, and crack closure – are measured and compared to the results of some numerical simulations. Partially automated optical inspection and the digital image correlation technique were used in the experimental investigation. In the finite element analyses, an actual geometry of a cracked structure has been modeled. The mechanical material behavior has been assumed as linear elastic in a first approach for calculating stress intensity factors. The nonlinear nature of the cyclic deformation has been taken into account by applying a cyclic plasticity model, and plasticity-induced crack closure is captured by a contact formulation.

Residual strength evaluation by DBEM for a cracked lap joint
The present work summarizes a numerical procedure aimed at the evaluation of the residual strength of a cracked lap joint, based on the competing failure mechanisms regulated by the R-curve analysis and plast...
Crack growth threshold under hold time conditions in DA Inconel 718 – A transition in the crack growth mechanism
Aeroengine manufacturers have to demonstrate that critical components such as turbine disks, made of DA Inconel 718, meet the certification requirements in term of fatigue crack growth. In order to be more re...
Crack path simulation for cylindrical contact under fretting conditions
In this work different strategies to estimate crack path for cylindrical contacts under fretting conditions are carried out. The main goal is to propose and to evaluate methodologies not only to estimate the ...
Experimental measurement and model validation of COD in pipe under bending with off-centered circumferential crack
The leak area of circumferential through-thickness crack in pipe under bending depends on the position of the crack with respect to the bending plane. In leak-before-break (LBB) analysis, the assumption that the cr...
Multiscale study of fracture in aluminum-magnesium alloy under fatigue and dynamic loading
In this paper we investigated the influence of consecutive dynamic and gigacycle fatigue loads on the lifetime of aluminum-magnesium alloy AlMg6. Preloading of samples was achieved during dynamic tensile test...
