Experimental methods for the characterization of fatigue in microstructures
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2013, Vol 7, Issue 23
Abstract
The mechanical fatigue behavior of gold microbeams is analyzed. Dedicated devices have been designed and built able to produce alternate loading on gold specimens; the electrostatic actuation is used as driving force. Gold beams are tested under both bending and tensile alternate loadings. Results were used to plot S-N curves and fatigue Goodman-Smith diagram in order to estimate the fatigue limit of the material in presence of mean and alternate stress conditions. The surface topography evolution is studied and failure modes are discussed.

The influence of fibre orientation on the post-cracking tensile behaviour of steel fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete
Adding fibres to concrete provides several advantages, especially in terms of controlling the crack opening width and propagation after the cracking onset. However, distribution and orientation of the fibres towa...
Fatigue strength of SS400 steel under non-proportional loading
This study discusses fatigue properties of low carbon steel, type SS400 steel, under non-proportional loading. Multiaxial fatigue tests under proportional and non-proportional loading conditions with various stres...
Duplex S-N fatigue curves: statistical distribution of the transition fatigue life
In recent years, very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of metallic materials has become a major point of interest for researchers and industries. The needs of specific industrial fields (aerospace, mechanical a...
Evaluation of the material’s damage in gas turbine rotors by instrumented spherical indentation
Experimental indentations are carried out on items of two different materials, taken in several location of various components from high pressure gas turbine rotor which have seen an extensive service. The compon...
Critical plane approach to multiaxial variable amplitude fatigue loading
A new critical plane approach based on the modified Manson-Coffin curve method (MMCCM) is presented in this paper for predicting fatigue lifetime under variable amplitude (VA) multiaxial fatigue loading. The crit...
