Multi-scale crack closure measurements with digital image correlation on Haynes 230
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 33
Abstract
An experimental campaign was developed to study fatigue crack growth in Haynes 230, a Ni-based superalloy. The effects of crack closure were investigated with digital image correlation, by applying two different approaches. Initially, full field regression algorithms were applied to extract the effective stress intensity factor ranges from the singular displacement field measured at crack tips. Local closure measurements were then performed by considering crack flanks relative displacements. Two points virtual extensometers were applied in this phase. Experimental results were then compared to the reference da/dN –ΔKeff curve: it was found that the correct estimation of crack opening levels shifts all the experimental points on the reference curve, showing that DIC can be successfully applied to measure crack closure effects.

Crack initiation and propagation paths in small diameter FSW 6082-T6 aluminium tubes under fatigue loading
This paper reports results of fatigue tests of friction stir welded (FSW) aluminium tubes. Relatively small 38 mm diameter tubes were used and hence an automated FSW process using a retracting tool was design...
Dynamic additional loads influencing the fatigue life of gears in an electric vehicle transmission
In recent years the implementation of the electric engine in the automotive industries has been increasingly marked. The speed of the electric motors is much higher than the combustion engine ones, bringing trans...
Evaluation and visualization of multiaxial stress and strain states under non-proportional loading
This paper presents a simple method of determining stresses and strains and a severity of loading history under non-proportional loadings with defining the rotation angles of the maximum principal stress and strai...
Evaluation of seismic mitigation of embankment model
Conducting experiment on embankment model by shaking table could be an accurate method to evaluate the behavior of embankment or any structures under seismic loading. In this research work, in order to assess the functi...
Critical plane approach to multiaxial variable amplitude fatigue loading
A new critical plane approach based on the modified Manson-Coffin curve method (MMCCM) is presented in this paper for predicting fatigue lifetime under variable amplitude (VA) multiaxial fatigue loading. The crit...
