OBSTRUCTIVE JAUNDICE: A CLINICAL STUDY

Abstract
BACKGROUND Jaundice is a frequent manifestation of biliary tract disorders and evaluation of obstructive jaundice is a common problem faced by general surgeons. Obstructive jaundice of varied aetiology is one of the main cause of hospital admissions. Hence, comprehensive study of aetiology, clinical presentation, management of obstructive jaundice is important in management of these patients. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Study the clinical history and presentation of obstructive jaundice. Study the various causes and sites of obstruction of the biliary tree. Study the different modalities of treatment of obstructive jaundice. METHODS Source of Data Patients admitted to the Department of General Surgery at Thanjavur Medical College were taken up for the study. Number of cases studied were 30 from September 2014 to December 2015. CONCLUSION Pain abdomen was present in 73.33% patients, dyspepsia in 60%. Itching and clay coloured in 53% of patients. Melena in 10% patients with 36 times increased risk for malignancy. Palpable gallbladder was also statistically significant for malignant aetiology
