Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 4
Abstract
ABSTRACT The economically and pharmaceutically important portunid crabs found along east coast of India. Most of the edible crabs in India come under the family Portunidae i.e., out of 16 species are S.serrata, S.tranquebarica, P.sanguinolentus, P.pelagicus, P.vigil, C.ferata and C.luchifera of edible crabs, 9 species belong to this family. The previous crab landing reports the crab population is declining every year. Crab fishery resource study is essential to improve the population of the respective areas. Parangipettai coast with its sheltered shoreline and brackish water systems support lucrative fishery in Tamil Nadu, southeast coast of India. In the present study, it is aimed to assess the C.lucifera fishery resources in four landing centres (Saamiyarpettai, Pudukuppam, Annankoil and Mudasalodai) along Parangipettai coast, south east coast of India. Total crab landings of C.lucifera in Parangipettai coast was 20643 Kg from August 2011 to July 2012. Among four stations in Parangipettai coast the overall total crabs landed was maximum in Mudasalodai and minimum in Pudukuppam. The total landings of the crabs were in the following order; Mudasalodai>Annankoil > Saamiyarpettai >Pudukuppam. Key words: Portunid crabs, survey, C.luchifera, Parangipettai coast.
