NEW HERMENEUTICS PARADIGM’S PERSPECTIVE ON TRANSLATION PROCESS AT TRANSLATION AND RE-INTERPRETATION OF THE ALIENATING METHOD

Abstract
The view that translation is the interpretation and reflection of the source text was confuted by the target-oriented theories. And a target-reader and culture paradigm based on an opposition to interpretation was rooted. Target-oriented paradigm has seated target culture to the center of translation via functional and target-oriented approach. Recently appeared points of view in the field of translation studies have started to bring forward that target and reader oriented approaches weaken the relationship between translation and the source culture. Blind side of the approach, which asserts the sense of translation appropriate for the reader and regards only the target culture and the expectations of target reader disregarding source culture, ignores the acquaintance of target culture and reader with different cultures and the fact that they increase their level via translations and learn new perspectives not existing in their own culture. When reader and target orientedness means that target reader finds himself in the translated text, the reader cannot get the chance of expanding his culture and opening up new horizons. The view that Schleiermacher’s alienating method brings a new interpretation for the current translation studies and should be reinterpreted has been gaining popularity recently. Especially, Lawrence Venuti’s emphasis on Schleiermacher’s method in recent years indicates that translation requires new theoretical perspectives in order to revise the social impact of translation. It’s a reality that reconsidering source and target poles in the field of translation will bring a new theoretical perspective by reinterpreting Schleiermacher and Gadamer’s hermeneutical approaches for the translation process. There is a requirement for a theoretical perspective stemming from a philosophical thought which can direct practical actions instead of deriving from practical actions of the translator and considers the historical and social effects in a body. When the distinction between philosophical and methodical hermeneutics, started by Schleiermacher, is considered, in this sense the direction of translation studies is seen as turning to philosophical hermeneutics again.
