NUTRITION FOR THE PHYSICALLY ACITVE CHILD
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 4
Abstract
The aim of this review was to present nutrition recommendations for the physically active child.Nutrition for the physically active child is a vitally important and complex issue since its primary aim should be to provide adequate amount of energy and essential nutrients while taking into account the increased energy expenditure and nutrient requirement along with the recommendations of nutritional prevention of diet-related diseases.Energy intake should meet energy requirement in order to allow proper development and body weight maintenance. Since energy requirement is highly individualised, body weight should be monitored to assess the adequacy of energy intake. BMI may also be calculated and assessed using percentile growth charts for children.Total energy intake should be adequately divided between the macronutrients, and vitamin and mineral requirement should be met. Physically active children should eat four or five meals a day. Proper food selection may be facilitated by following the food pyramid worked out by Szostak. Water intake plays an essential role. It is of crucial importance to develop in the physically active children the habit of drinking fluids before, during and after exercise. A vital issue is the immediate resynthesis of glycogen stores after exercise by serving a high-carbohydrate meal as soon as possible after the exercise and then after two and four hours. The fundamental rule should be not using vitamin and mineral supplementation if the child consumes adequate amount of energy from various food groups.
