Obesity and lifestyle of elderly women

Abstract

Introduction. Increase in the prevalence of obesity in the population of older persons influences the morbidity rate for the non-communicable diseases, decrease the functional fitness and the quality of life.Aim. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of obesity among older women in relation to selected factors of their lifestyle.Material and methods. The research was carried out a random sample women in the age 70-74 years of two districts of Warsaw. Prevalence of overweight and obesity was assessed using the BMI and abdominal obesity based on waist circumference. Information about lifestyle (self-assessment of health, physical activity, cigarette smoking) were collected by interview.Results. Overweight (BMI 25-29.9) was found in 39% women and obesity (BMI ≥ 30) in 44.1%. All obese women have abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥ 88 cm). No obese women more often than obese evaluate their health status as vary good or good, had less difficulties in performing day-to-day activities related to physical activity, and more often smoking cigarettes.Conclusions. One of the most important tasks of modern geriatrics should become action to restrain the rise for the epidemic of obesity and improve the quality of life of older people through the promotion of the principles of proper nutrition and increasing daily physical activity.
