Ocena kiełkowania ziarniaków mieszanek traw gazonowych pokrytych siarczanem żelaza w celu zwalczania mchów

Abstract

The aim of the work was to evaluate the effect of iron sulphate, coating grass kernels of two selected lawn mixtures aiming moss control, on the germination process of seeds. In the G mixture, grass kernels were coated with the monohydrate form of iron sulfate (FeSO4 H2O), while in the R mixture – the heptahydrate form of iron (FeSO4 7H2O). Mixture H was a control – its kernels were not coated with iron sulphate. Germination tests were carried out in accordance with the ISTA methodology, placing 100 kernels in 3 replicates on Petri dishes with tissue paper. Germination assessment was also carried out under the conditions of the pot experiment in the greenhouse, sowing the kernels into the soil in the cuvettes. Investigations about germination was carried out in 2014–2015. The germination level of grass kernels on Petri dishes and in soil was evaluated in percent. It was found, that among the assessed lawn grass mixtures used for the renovation of moss infested lawns, the higher level of seed germination was determined by R mixture. In this mixture, the concentration of iron sulphate in 1 gram of kernels in the amount of 1.5 mg Fe, did not inhibit germination and initial growth and development of seedlings. The results of germination after 20 days, from 95% to 99%, were similar to the control mixture H (without iron sulphate coated the grass kernels). In the G mixture, the concentration of 31.92 mg Fe used in the process of coating 1 gram of grass seeds, was too high making it impossible to germination on Petri dishes. Sowing the seed mixture G into the soil significantly reduced the effects of the adverse impact of high iron sulphate content on their germination. However, the level of seeds germination after 20 days from sowing was significantly lower, compared to R mixture, ranging from 73 to 78%.
