OCHRONA STATKÓW POWIETRZNYCH PRZED BEZPRAWNĄ INGERENCJĄ

Journal Title: Studia Humanistyczno-Społeczne - Year 2016, Vol 12, Issue

Abstract

In the history of civil aviation there were many acts of aircraft hijacking which often ended tragically. The acts were committed by people with mental disorders or terrorists who wanted to draw people’s attention to specific social, political or religious issues. Terrorists, who decided to hijack the aircraft, were often driven by the certain ideology and their aim was to weaken the authority, take revenge for certain government actions or force some concessions, e.g. release their colleagues who were imprisoned because of the acts of terrorism. Some groups of people used to hijack the aircraft in order to demand a ransom. Regardless of the purpose, every act of hijacking an aircraft with passengers on board as hostages requires an appropriate response of the authorities of the country, against which the act is directed. Terrorists are aware of the publicity which the hijacking would bring. They also know that the pressure from society can force the government to make concessions and meet their conditions. The primary objective of the study is to show the threats to the modern aviation caused by terrorist groups and to assess the security measures applied at airports and on board of civil aircraft. One should be aware that together with the development of technology the methods used by terrorists will change, what is also stressed by the authors.
