ODESSA SHIBBOLETHS OF FRENCH ORIGIN

Journal Title: Мова - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 23

Abstract

This article is a fragment of the research of the Russian-French interaction in the framework of linguocultural space of Odessa. The purpose of the study is to show the ways a foreign language influences Russian speech in a multicultural region taking the shining examples of the French-Russian language interaction as the material for the investigation. Methods of sociolinguistic, etymological, semantic and comparative analyses were used in the work presented. The finding of our analysis suggests that lexical and phraseological borrowings from everyday ordinary discourse are the most tenacious and long-living in the urban vernacular. The use of regional Shibboleths has usually a territorial and social dimension and affects the formation of regional peculiarities of speech rules. The practical value of the article consists in the ability to use its results in the training courses that deal with issues of intercultural and translingual relations, language evolution, and translation. The results of the study indicate the following functional features of the Odessa Shibboleths of French origin as the most significant in the Russian city speech of Odessa: 1) Gallicisms classified by dictionary-authors as obsolete have a considerably longer usage history in the urban vernacular of Odessa than in the center of the original Russian language continent, 2) there has been marked a tendency to neutralize stylistically coloured words, 3) literally translation is preferred when it comes to French words with a metaphoric meaning, not typical of the semantic structure of their Russian equivalents listed in the dictionaries, 4) with a vast number of set-expressions word-for-word translation is predominating in frequency over traditional equivalents, 5) most of the Franco-Russian hybrids made up in the urban vernacular of Odessa city are not recorded in the dictionaries.
