„Odległość jest niczym”. Ignacego Domeyki życie na skrzyżowaniu cywilizacji

Abstract
Beata Mytych-Forajter takes for the point of departure for her text Ignacy Domeyko’ thesis expressed in the letter to the cousin of Władysław Laskowicz with the succinct phrase “the distance is nothing.” It allows to understand Domeyko’s life choices. After graduating from Paris School of Mining, he decided to leave for exotic Chile, and then, after twelve years of working at the school of mines in Coquimbo, decided to marry a Chilean woman and stay in this longest country of the world. The analysis of the fragments of Domeyko’s diary and letters leads to the conclusion that the openness to other and unfamiliar worlds which characterizes the emigrant stems not only from his special personality profile but also from the type of humanistic-technical education, which allowed him to settle anywhere.
