ON SARTRE’S RÉFLEXIONS SUR LA QUESTION JUIVE (1946) AND ITS POSTERITY

Abstract
When Jean-Paul Sartre published his essay Réflexions sur laquestion juive in 1946, only a year after the ending of World WarII, the essay was met with a large scale of different reactions, fromJews as well as from non-Jews. In this article, I shall be lookingat some of these reactions. I will also take into account variousreactions to the essay about 50 years later, when a seminar washeld to celebrate the anniversary of its publication (under the titleAntisemite and Jew) in the US in 1948.1 Inspired by the Bakhtiniannotion of polyphony, I shall discuss some controversial aspectsof the essay and its reception, which I will analyze in relation toSartre’s hegemonic position at the time, as a famous, non-Jewishintellectual.
