ON THE POLISH-AND-RUSSIAN LITERARY PARALLEL: „THE OLD SERVANT” BY H. SENKEVICH AND „SERVANTS OF AN OLD AGE” BY I. GONCHAROV

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 18

Abstract

This article compares different aspects of genres in Senkevich’s and Goncharov’s stories. The sketches „The Old Servant” and „Servants of an Old Age” have been chosen for the analysis. The attention is focused on separate genre components of the sketches: idealism, memoirs and a biographical component of the satire. While Senkevich creates farmstead life, harmony between landlords and servants, Goncharov is more interested in servants. It is a servant of a bachelor in Saint Petersburg whose image is considered in four sketches of Goncharov’s cycle. The types of the servant as a secular dandy, servant-drunkard and servant-usurer are presented. These sketches are characterized by autobiographical implication. It is present in both Goncharov’s and Senkevich’s stories. The article also analyses the preface to Goncharov’s cycle, and the epilogue to Senkevich’s „The Old Servant” and one of the sketches in Goncharov’s cycle – „Matvei”.
